Getting to Iona
Reaching Iona takes a little more planning than other destinations, but the journey is straightforward and part of what makes staying here feel different…
The journey
Most visitors travel via Oban and the Isle of Mull, before taking a short ferry crossing to Iona.
Each stage is well connected and, once you arrive, everything on the island is within easy reach.
Oban is the main gateway to the west coast islands and can be reached by car, train or coach from across Scotland.
If you’re travelling from Glasgow or further afield, Oban is typically the starting point for your journey to Iona.
Step 1: Travel to Oban
From Oban, take the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry to Craignure on the Isle of Mull.
The crossing takes around 45 minutes and runs regularly throughout the day.
Step 2: Ferry to Mull
From Craignure, it’s a scenic drive across Mull to Fionnphort on the south-west tip of the island.

For those with restricted mobility, Blue Badge holders can apply in advance for a permit to bring a vehicle onto the island.
