What to expect from Iona
A visit to Iona is shaped by its landscape and its history. While small in size, the island offers a range of experiences—from coastal walks and landmarks to simple moments spent by the water. Everything is within reach, making it easy to explore at your own pace…
Explore the island on foot
Everything on Iona is within reach without needing transport.
The island is small—around one mile wide and 3.5 miles long. As a result, visitors do not bring vehicles onto the island. If you’re travelling by car, parking is available at Fionnphort on Mull before taking the short ferry crossing. For those with restricted mobility, Blue Badge holders can apply in advance for a permit to bring a vehicle across.
Iona is perfectly suited to walking or cycling, allowing you to take in the landscape at your own pace. Distances are short, but the landscape feels expansive, with views that shift throughout the day.
On arrival, Jamie can meet guests from the ferry and bring them directly to Machair House, making the final part of the journey simple and straightforward.
Staying at Machair Croft places you within easy reach of the island’s main walking routes, beaches, and key landmarks.
Things to do on Iona
At the heart of the island, Iona Abbey is one of Scotland’s most recognised historic sites. Surrounded by other places of significance, it offers a strong sense of the island’s history and is easily reached on foot.
Iona Abbey
Iona is known for its open beaches and coastal views. From Martyrs Bay by the ferry to the wider stretch of Traigh Mòr, the coastline is easily accessible and well suited to walking at your own pace.
Beaches
Set within the machair, Iona’s small, community-run golf course offers a relaxed and unique experience. Rather than a traditional course, the grass is kept naturally trimmed by grazing cattle and sheep.
Free to play, it’s a good reason to bring your golf clubs along on your visit.
Golfing
A small selection of cafés, restaurants and local shops are dotted across the island. All are within walking distance, making it easy to head out for a meal or pick up essentials during your stay.
